Giant mantas, sharks, whales, dolphins, and fish species that can't be found anywhere else on Earth call the Revillagigedo Islands home. Located some 250 miles south of Baja California, only six nautical miles around the islands are protected. The rest of the waters of the archipelago are threatened by illegal fishing, as well as industrial tuna fishing fleets and sport fishing. These spectacular images were captured in March of 2016, when the Nat Geo Pristine Seas team partnered with Mares Mexicanos to conduct an expedition to explore the waters around the islands—including never-before-surveyed seamounts—which many consider to be the “Galápagos of Mexico.” Now Mexico has the opportunity to protect this unique archipelago and the marine life that depends on it for generations to come. #SalvaRevillagigedo
